Artist Statement:
In my art practice, I seek to explore the varied nature of our human
experience and to analyze what it entails to process and accept, to
heal, to feel whole. Found and readymade materials are my primary
means for exploring and expressing this, in that they have the
potential to conjure up a whole spectrum of associations. The objects
I select and work with convey something hushed, honest, humorous and
humbled about the human condition, particularly the more ignorable and
disposable facets. Once assembled, I use gesso, followed by materials
such as paint, crayon, cut-out images, lace, graphite and pigment to
add visual interest and develop interrelationships between the varying
objects. My earlier work was heavily encrusted in gesso as a means to
cover up or remove each object from it's immediate association. As the
work has progressed I have begun to leave some objects exposed,
lending a more confrontational, yet private quality to the final
products.
