Artist Statement

Pascal “placed man between two infinities, the infinitely large scale of the universe, in the face of which man is insignificant, and the infinitely small, in the face of which he is a monster… each is an abyss” (Philip Fisher, Wonder, the Rainbow, and the Aesthetics of Rare Experiences).

I am fascinated by escapism: how and why our senses transport us to imaginary worlds, how electronic media change the way we feel the present moment and how it can mediate our lives. Through film and theatrical effects, I immerse viewers in the experience of an illusion—what’s real and what’s fabrication?

These new worlds are uncanny and mysterious. I explore how unconscious reactions

shape emotion; how certain spaces, sounds, and objects may provoke fear or incite

wonder. I know Pascal’s abyss, the silence of its infinite spaces. I get lost there.

In my work I raise questions of contemporary society: how technology affects our daily

lives, mediates our experiences, alienates our instincts. By personifying inanimate forms and creating fictional environments, I hope to surprise my viewers with their own internal worlds.

Biography

I earned my BS in English Education and minor in Theater Arts from Boston University in 2000. In 2003, I moved to Denver to pursue a career in Fine Arts, where I was a resident artist and teacher at the Arvada Center for the Arts, and member of Spark Gallery & Sandra Phillips Gallery for 6 years. In 2006, I ran the ceramics program at Dakota Ridge High School, and taught 2d, 3d design, drawing and ceramics. During my initial time exhibiting in Denver, I won Westword’s Best Ceramics Show in 2005 for my solo exhibition microCOSMIC, was the featured artist for Sculptural Pursuit Magazine, and in Ceramics Monthly for exhibitions in Colorado Clay 2003, 2005 and 2010.

I earned my MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2009, where Diamler Financial

nominated my work in Loose Cannon for an Emerging Artist Award, at the Cranbrook

Art Museum, Michigan. I am currently an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts and Art

Education at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design, where I teach all levels of

ceramics and sculpture, the psychology of creativity and instructional technology. I

actively exhibit my work regionally and nationally. I have been invited to show my

installation work at the Denver Art Museum in 2011. I am member of Ice Cube Gallery in Denver. I live with my husband in Lafayatte, Colorado.
