Artist Statement
Using environmental, ecological and biological theories and connections, I create mixed media installations that relate to man’s primal connections with the ancient past. The attempt to communicate man’s impulse to capture, control and categorize the natural world materializes as an amateur laboratory, a place for examination and creation, discovery and observation, invention and destruction.
Artist Bio
For 10 years, JENNIFER JEANNELLE has enjoyed teaching Ceramics and Sculpture to high school students and has led workshops for other Colorado art teachers. While working full-time and raising a family, she maintains her studio, often creating art alongside her students. “I like to be a role model for my students,” she says. “Their curiosity inspires my work and helps me to clarify what my work is really about.” Jennifer describes her work as a collaboration with the earth by making connections between art and science. Through the use of a variety of natural and synthetic materials, her work explores the transcendence of time: clay, concrete, plastic and glass symbolize permanence; plant life, rusty metal, wax and electric components signify decay. “My work utilizes nature as inspiration - I explore the relationship between nature and human impact, interpreting my experiences and observations by mimicking, abstracting, recreating and reinterpreting.” Jennifer’s plans to continue teaching include participation in a teacher exchange to Europe. “Teaching art, and hopefully showing my art there, too, would be an amazing experience for me and my family. Living your dreams can’t end just because life gets a bit busy!”
JENNIFER JEANNELLE received her BFA from Metropolitan State College of Denver and her MFA from the Art Institute of Boston.
